Malta. It was my second holiday of the year and had a blasting time with the Malteasing crew – Louisa, Charlie, Michael and Anna. Curious friends and PRs at press days would come up to me and ask if the holiday was part of the press trip because of the ‘#Malteasing‘ hashtag that was fed out of control (sorry guys) on our Instagram and Twitter feeds, no, we actually created a hashtag specifically for the trip. That hashtag and our presence on social media resulted in many interesting aspects and reactions along the way – locals, British expats and holiday goers leaving comments saying ‘I was there last week’, ‘I lived there’, such and such, I even had a couple of emails from new followers asking for my suggestions on hotels in Malta. The pressure of having to upload pictures on Instagram to entertain the followers, that gained new followings and lost a handful. Testing the waters to enable or maintain guest relations with Le Meridien Malta in St Julian’s Bay and its hotel group Starwood, where we stayed for 6 nights (there was a little hiccup with the service in the beginning, issues resolved the next day all thanks to social media), and complimentary drinks to promote #WestinWeekend courtesy of Westin Dragonara Resort.
Malta is a fascinating country, very hot. We pretty much covered three-quarter of the island, you would always find interesting undiscovered spots in the back streets of the town/city – the unspoilt heritage buildings, laundry hanging outside the windows, medieval cathedrals, overgrown purple foliage, classic car models from the 50s parked in the streets of Valletta and Mdina, road tripping in heavy flash flood and then we came across an abandoned film set from the 80s movie Popeye now a tourist attraction site. Seafood feast straight from the sea in Marsaxlokk. We also visited Mdina, an old fortified capital of Malta. An impromptu shopping at Zara in Sliema, a fifteen minute walking distance from the hotel. Did you know Malta was one of the prime filming locations in Games of Thrones, hell yeah!
