You know me being a typical Chinese and food lover, I love snapping my food and I rarely finish my plate, sorry chef! You would often see me re-aarange the plate/s and style it with fashion accessory or grab a prop from a nearby table, that would deemed fit for Instagram. That’s neo-food culture for you.
I recently had the opportunity to visit The Gilbert Scott restaurant at St Pancras Renaissance Hotel (formerly Midland Grand Hotel) not once but twice in two weeks, first was a splendid meal with a small party of online media editors and bloggers coincided with ever so engaging table talk, discussing about ‘stuff’, any sort of stuff hosted by the lovely Navaz of Disney Roller Girl, a week later I invited my buddy Shini along to sample their summer lunch menu. The hotel is truly a spectacle, majestic and romantic, it’s one of the finest gothic masterpiece ever built in Britain today, designed by architect Sir George Gilbert Scott in 1866 who also designed the Albert Memorial and Victoria and Albert Museum. I can remember it was all boarded up for decades for pending demolition, the hotel’s exterior and presence was barely visible. However, saved by the bell, after an extensive renovation, St Pancras Renaissance Hotel opened its doors on 5th May 2011. Every angle has its finest details; the Victorian décor, gold leaf decoration, original Victorian tile flooring, ornate stencilling, elaborate ceilings, handcrafted stonework, and extravagant wallpaper. Don’t forget the infamous grandeur staircase featured in the Spice Girls’s ‘Wannabe’ video, it’s still there. Zig-a-zig-ah!
We kicked off the afternoon with mocktails for us non-alcohol drinkers; elderflower blended with raspberry, tarragon and lemon. To start, I had the Dorset Crab with pickled cucumber, radish, nectarine – I’m a big fan of crab meat, it would be foolish not to order a delicacy as a starter. Followed by Chicken Schnitzel with fried egg, anchovy, mayonnaise, capers and Heirloom tomato salad, Brown butter mash as sides – Although the main looked basic, the chicken tasted delicious, tender and comforting to eat. For the pudding, Watermelon, Dandelion & burdock with milk ice cream, basil – love the unique flavour of refreshingly sweet and milky texture from the watermelon and milk ice cream. Many thanks to The Gilbert Scott for the wonderful afternoon lunch, same goes to the waiting staff for their impeccable service and hospitality.
